Before booking your CPCS test or NPORS CSCS test, you will need to have passed the touch screen Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test for Operatives within the last 2 years.

What does the test involve?

The HS&E test is a touch screen test, which has 50 questions. You will have 45 minutes to answer the 50 questions.

There are five knowledge areas included in the test:

• Legal & Management

• Health & Welfare

• General Safety

• High Risk Activities

• Environment

The test costs £22 if you book direct with Pearson Vue.

My CSCS card is in date, why do I need to retake the health & safety test?

Although your current test lasts the life of your CSCS card, CPCS and NPORS rules require you to have passed the HS&E test within the last two years before booking the CPCS test.

 

If you haven't passed the HS&E test before taking the NPORS test, you will be issued with a Traditional NPORS card instead of the CSCS NPORS card.

If you pass the HS&E test after taking the NPORS test, we can apply to upgrade your Traditional card to the CSCS NPORS card but this will incur a charge of £35 +VAT per card.

CITB have a range of materials to help you revise for the HS&E Operatives test, including a question and answer book, a DVD, a digital download, and an App for Android or iOS.

Booking the CITB HS&E Test

You will need to book the Health, Safety & Environment test for Operatives at your preferred Pearson Vue test centre, by booking online or over the phone.

Call the booking line on 0344 994 4488. Lines are open from 8am to 8pm Mondays to Fridays, and from 8am to 12pm on Saturdays.​

To book over the phone you will need to give the following information:

• You need to book the HS&E test for Operatives

• Which test centre you require (you can find your nearest test centre here)

• Your full address

• Your CITB registration number if you have previously taken a HS&E test or applied for a CSCS, CPCS or CISRS card (you can find your registration number by putting your surname and National Insurance number into the card checker here)

• Whether you need special assistance (see below)

Alternatively we can book the HS&E test for you for a small fee.
