This course is designed for those already experienced in operating a 360 excavator who require additional training and certification to carry out lifting duties using the machine.

Course Aims

To provide thorough theory and practical training in operating the excavator to lift objects, to enable the candidate to pass the NPORS theory and practical tests.

How long is the course?

Course length depends on your experience:​

Recommended Duration:

Novice: 1-2 Days

Refresher (with test): 1 Day

Experienced Worker Test: ½ Day (no training beforehand)

What will I learn on the course?

To pass the test, you must successfully carry out the following activities:

 

  • Complete all manufacturers pre-start checks

  • Prepare the excavator for the relevant work

  • Travel to the work area:

    • Travel the excavator up and down a gradient

    • Travel over varying terrain

    • Travel through a restriction in a forward and reverse direction

  • Prepare and set up to lift

  • Carry out lifting and travelling duties:

    • ​Liaise with the slinger/signaller and agree signal codes

    • ​Identify weights and centres of gravity

    • Lift, move and place a load under the direction of a slinger/signaller

    • Travel a load over undulating ground

    • Travel through a restriction

    • Perform left and right turns with sprockets driving and leading

  • Place the excavator in the safe park position with all lifting accessories removed

  • The practical test must be completed within 1 hour.

NPORS Excavator as a Crane Test

Candidates will complete a theory and practical test.

The theory test consists of 5 written questions and 20 multiple choice questions. Candidates will be provided with a copy of the theory test questions before the test.

If any candidates experience difficulties with reading or writing, please let us know so we can assist them appropriately.

Candidates requiring the Traditional NPORS card with the "HS&E Tested" logo on the card must have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Operatives test within two years of the NPORS test date.

Candidates requiring the CSCS NPORS card must also have passed the CITB Health, Safety & Environment Operatives test within two years of the NPORS test date.

Achievement

There are 2 types of NPORS cards available. Once candidates have passed both the theory and practical tests they will either achieve the 5 year Traditional NPORS Card or the 2 year NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator Card (requires an NVQ on expiry).

What happens after I complete the course?

The Traditional NPORS Card is valid for 5 years and can be renewed by either an employer signing a renewal form, or by the operative completing refresher training.

 

The NPORS CSCS Red Trained Operator card is valid for 2 years, once achieved you can upgrade to an NPORS Blue Competent Operator card. To upgrade to a blue card, you must achieve the NVQ in Plant Operations before your red card expires.

Site Requirements for NPORS Excavator as a Crane Training

If you wish to carry out the NPORS Excavator as a Crane test at your own site, the following requirements must be met to ensure the test can be completed safely and in line with NPORS standards.

Suitable Machine

  • A 360 excavator suitable for lifting operations must be available

  • The machine must be in safe working condition

  • All relevant LOLER certification and inspections must be up to date

  • The excavator must be fitted with an approved lifting point (e.g. lifting eye/hook)

  • The machine must be appropriate for the category being tested

  • The operator's manual must be available

  • The lifting chart should be situated in the cab or in the manufacturer’s operation and maintenance manual

 

Safe Working Area

  • A secure and clearly defined working area must be provided

  • The area must be free from unnecessary hazards

  • Ground conditions must be safe and suitable for operation

  • Adequate space must be available to carry out all required tasks

 

Lifting Accessories

  • Suitable lifting accessories must be provided, such as:

    • Chains

    • Slings

    • Shackles

  • All lifting equipment must:

    • Be in good condition

    • Have valid certification

    • Be suitable for the loads being used

 

Loads for Lifting

  • Suitable loads must be available for the test

  • Loads should:

    • Be appropriate in weight and size

    • Allow the candidate to demonstrate safe lifting and placing

Lifting Plan / Safe System of Work
  • A basic lifting plan or safe system of work must be in place

  • This should include:

    • Safe lifting procedures

    • Awareness of load weights and limits

    • Clear roles and responsibilities

Communication

Suitable communication methods must be in place, such as:

  • A slinger/signaller (where required)

  • Agreed hand signals or communication system

Health & Safety Requirements

  • All site health and safety rules must be followed

  • Appropriate PPE must be worn at all times, including:

    • Safety helmet

    • High visibility clothing

    • Safety boots

  • A site induction may be required prior to the test

 

Support on Site

  • A responsible person should be available on site to:

    • Provide access

    • Assist with site setup if required

 

Access & Facilities

  • Safe access to the site must be provided

  • Welfare facilities should be available where possible

 

Final Checks

All site-based testing is subject to approval. If the site does not meet the required standard, the test may need to be rearranged.
