Which Plant Training Course Do I Need?

Choosing the right course can sometimes be confusing, especially if you are new to the industry or unsure which qualification is required for your job role.

At Western Plant Training, we offer both NPORS and Lantra training for a range of plant machinery and site safety courses. This guide explains the differences and helps you decide which course may be right for you.

I Have Never Operated Plant Machinery Before

If you have little or no experience, you will normally require a novice course.

Novice courses include:

  • More training days

  • More time operating the machine

  • Theory and practical instruction

  • Preparation for the assessment/test

These courses are designed to help beginners become safe and confident operators.

I Already Have Experience Operating Machinery

If you already operate machinery regularly but do not hold a qualification, you may be suitable for:

  • An experienced worker test

  • A refresher course

  • A shorter training course

We usually recommend a pre-course assessment to check your current ability and recommend the correct amount of training.

This helps avoid booking more training than you actually need.

NPORS or Lantra – What’s the Difference?
NPORS

NPORS qualifications are widely recognised within the construction industry and are commonly used on construction sites.

NPORS courses usually include:

  • Theory test

  • Practical test

  • Operator card/certificate

NPORS cards can also be upgraded to include the CSCS logo, provided the relevant requirements are met.

NPORS is often the preferred option for:

  • Construction sites

  • Groundworks

  • Civil engineering work

  • Operators needing proof of competence on site

Lantra

Lantra training is widely recognised within:

  • Agriculture

  • Estates

  • Forestry

  • Land-based industries

  • Smaller private sites

Lantra courses focus on practical training and safe operation.

Lantra is often a good option for:

  • Farmers and agricultural workers

  • Estate maintenance staff

  • Private landowners

  • Operators not requiring a CSCS-linked card

Do I Need a Test or Training?

  • Refresher training

  • Experienced worker test

  • Familiarisation before testing

A pre-course assessment can help determine the most suitable option.

What Is 1-to-1 Training?

We specialise in 1-to-1 training, meaning you train directly with the instructor rather than sharing the machine with a large group.

Benefits include:

  • More machine time

  • Training tailored to your ability

  • Faster progress

  • Dedicated instructor support

  • Greater confidence operating the machine

We can also provide group training for employers or multiple candidates.

Do I Need the HS&E Test?

If you require an NPORS card with the CSCS logo, you will normally need to complete the:

  • CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test

This is separate from your plant training course.

We can advise you on the requirements during booking.
